Meet the Lumière Dreamers: Queer As Funk
It started, like most good ideas, over beer and song. A few short years later, Vancouver’s Queer as Funk is renowned for its tight rhythm section, hot horns, and soulful vocals, bringing together the city’s best musicians in a dynamic, high-energy dance band. There's nothing this tight-knit band loves more than performing together, and that love is palpable to audiences everywhere.
With repertoire ranging from beloved funk, soul and Motown classics of the 60's and 70's (Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Stevie Wonder) to contemporary pop favourites (Amy Winehouse, Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake), Queer as Funk is also the sharpest-dressed suit-and-tie band in town.
Since its inception in early 2013, Queer As Funk has played to consistently sold out audiences, including self-produced shows at Vancouver venues Fortune Sound Club, The Imperial and The Commodore Ballroom, and has travelled to Pride festivals across Canada, including Yukon Pride’s 24 Hours of Gaylight. In 2018 the band was a featured performer at InterPride - The International Association of LGBTI Pride Organizers’ conference in Saskatoon.
"There's nowt so queer as folk", or so the old English adage goes. Queer As Funk believes in celebrating differences, and what better way than with a big ol' dance party?
