Location: Robson Street, Vancouver

Winter’s Dance #OnRobson ~ The Snow Queen

On December 1 + 2, 2017 Winter’s Dance #onRobson returned for our second iteration with a public art installation to kick off the holiday season.

This season, Small Stage created a mixed reality dance experience by combining live and digital dance to present “The Snow Queen”.

Inspired by The Nutcracker and the Sugar Plum Fairy, people walking along Robson Street were treated to a front-row seat to “The Snow Queen”, a whimsical non-linear story about a Snow Queen and her kingdom that was projected onto the John Robson Building (1155 Robson Street) creating a winter wonderland amidst the hustle and bustle of Robson Street.

The whimsical story of the “The Snow Queen” is based on the Snow Queen and her three side-kicks.

Small Stage invited audience members to walk around the 1100 Block of Robson Street and experience two key elements~

  • LIVE ~ three dancers inside a storefront window.

  • DIGITAL ~ a non-linear dance narrative video with an original sound composition and animation, that was large scale projection mapped onto the facade of the John Robson Building. The projection content our Snow Queen, her three side-kicks and our snowflake kingdom, with special effects and animation.

Audience members were invited to walk around Robson Street and experience performances on 15-minute loop that ran continuously from 6-9pm each night.

“The holidays are always such a magical time of year,” explains Teri Smith, Executive Director of the RSBA, “and we want to create something extra special for our visitors as they shop, dine and stroll Robson Street”.

**NOTE: this project was featured in the Canada Council, Bringing the Arts to Live.

I am excited to see another unique collaboration between Small Stage and Robson Street bring the arts to a public space for everyone to enjoy. It’s the perfect setting to create a bit of holiday magic.
