Workshops:

1pm ~ Bhaṅgṛā

Hardeep Singh Sahota

Bhaṅgṛā is a type of traditional dance of the Indian subcontinent, originating in the Majha area of Punjab.

The dance was associated primarily with the spring harvest festival Vaisakhi, and it is from one of the major products of the harvest—bhang (hemp)—that bhangra drew its name. In a typical performance, several dancers executed vigorous kicks, leaps, and bends of the body to the accompaniment of short songs called boliyan and, most significantly, to the beat of a dhol (double-headed drum).

1:30pm ~ Oriental Bellydance

Ashley Rhianne

Oriental Bellydance is an expressionist type of dance that originated in Egypt and that emphasizes complex movements of the torso. It has evolved to take many different forms depending on the country and region, both in costume and dance style.

2pm ~ Ballet Barre

Suzanne Ouellette

barre is a stationary handrail that provides support for people during various types of exercise. Barres are used extensively in ballet training and warm up exercises, where such exercises are commonly referred to as barre work. In a ballet class, barre may also refer to the part of the class that involves barre work.

2:30pm ~ Tap

Alex Clancy

Tap dance is a type of dance characterised by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. The sound is made by shoes that have a metal "tap" on the heel and toe.

There are several styles of tap dance, including rhythm (jazz), classical, Broadway, and post-modern. Broadway tap often focuses on formations, choreography and generally less complex rhythms; it is widely performed in musical theatre.

3pm ~ Jazz

Jacq Smith

Jazz dance is a performance dance technique and style that first emerged in the United States in the early twentieth century.  Jazz dance may refer to vernacular jazz or to Broadway or theatrical jazz.

3:30pm ~ Scottish Highland

Susan Nase

Scottish Highland dancing is a style of competitive solo dancing developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th and 20th centuries, in the context of competitions at public events such as the Highland games.

4pm ~ Waacking

JoJo Zolina

Waacking (also known as Whacking or Wacking) is a form of street dance created in the LGBT clubs of Los Angeles during the 1970s disco era. The style is typically done to 70s disco music and is mainly distinguishable by its rotational arm movements, posing and emphasis on expressiveness.

4:30pm ~ Joy of Jigging: Metis Inspired Movement

Jeanette Kotowich

The Red River Jig is a proper name attributed to both the Canadian Métis and the First Nations, in reference to a traditional dance and accompanying fiddle tune. The dance’s performers and fiddlers currently and historically includes individuals identifying as First NationsFrench Canadian, or Scottish Canadians, as well as others involved in the expansive 19th century fur trade. The origins of the dance can be traced to traditional dances of the First NationsFrenchEnglishScots, and Orcadian peoples, from whom the Métis Nation descended. The name is also in reference to the Red River of the North, which forms the border between North Dakota and Minnesota (USA) and flows north through Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada before emptying into Hudson's Bay.
